Should the state fund schools? What should the curriculum be?

Ebonee (a Radical Democrat) writes:
Welcome my fellow Athenians today we came together to discuss a couple of issues concerning our education & social welfare. These are two very important topics and some may say I didn’t know we had education facilities such as schools…. Well right now we have one kind of schooling that’s taught by Sophists which right now are expensive and only some of our Athenians can afford that. That is why I am here to do to try to put a change in that. Our education should not be limited to only one kind of Athenian; I feel that it should be offered for all Athenians, these are our children we are talking about not just us, who in here would like to see Athens be filled with uneducated men?
Now would be our chance to say, we ALL are going to be educated, and we need to let the Government know that for what we do our education should not cost! We the people think that the Government should pay for their Athenian people’s education. If we stand here and do nothing we should just look our kids in the eye and say “we will not educate you, but go to WAR and fight for who WE are!” There should be three curriculums: war training, rhetoric and law, slave workshops. We need to know how to go into battle, what moves to make, and how to defend! Don’t you think? An in these assembly’s wouldn’t it be nice to have a discussion and not an argument? We need to know the laws and rules in Athens and a proper way to discuss issues amongst our fellow Athenian, that’s what the laws class would do. These slave workshops I know you all are looking like why should we educate them? They are for our own benefit to teach the slaves the proper way to take care of our Athenian Households, they would learn how to cook, clean armor and artillery, harvest crops, and take care of the things we need them to do. I think we should take advantage of this opportunity. We may ask, who will teach our fellow Athenians? We will use the men who are showing to these assembly’s that are specialized or talented in the courses, and those who volunteer will be blessed by Our Great Gods! We have many poor citizens in our community and if you are a citizen of Athens and you are poor, we the people are here to help you, we need to understand that they are our people and we should not want to see any of them poor, some of them have fought in these battles and are wounded to where they can’t work. And who cannot work and are poor should receive a form of payment to keep them from falling into slavery all because they fought in battle and was injured. Citizens of Athens that attend the assembly’s should receive a form of a payment not by just currency but by our assets because we can’t afford to pay everyone cash but we do have many assets of ours we can give and they can make a profit for their families, such as when we see your attendance Socratic’s would receive private lessons from a teacher in pottery or the arts, and the indeterminate’s will receive a slave to account for their farms or property that needs attended to while the absence of them being in the meetings, and everyone else would receive a small token of money for attending. How would we get this money for all of these things? We will tax land owners, those who own many slaves, (more then 10) and those who have gone to prestige’s schools who can afford to be taxed and doing this to help our community. If we do this our farmers will have crops and other resources growing, which will build our community and will bring more trade and other cities to come and who also will be taxed for our goods. I ask that we open our eyes and see that We are the answer to all problems! And we need to be One.
